Description

A finely worked brass alms dish from Nuremberg, characterised by its repoussé central boss decorated with swirling gadroons radiating in a vortex-like form, symbolising eternity and divine order. Surrounding the boss is a ring of stylised petals framed within a concentric band of Gothic script, most likely a benedictory inscription or moralising text typical of such objects produced for ecclesiastical use. The broad rim is embellished with repetitive stamped motifs, enhancing the sense of rhythm and order.

These dishes, classified by Klaus Tiedemann in his study of Nuremberg metalwork, represent the highly standardised yet artistically refined output of Nuremberg’s specialist brass workshops in the 16th century. Intended for liturgical use, they were commonly employed during offertory rites to receive alms, while also serving a symbolic function, reflecting both the wealth of the parish and the theological emphasis on charity.
