Description
A carved oak figure of the Virgin and Child dating from the closing years of the Gothic period, seated upon a simple throne and crowned as the Queen of Heaven. The Christ Child sits upon her knee, their faces touching in an intimate and tender expression of maternal affection, a characteristic feature of late medieval Marian imagery.
Executed in oak and retaining a rich, naturally aged surface, the sculpture displays the elegant flowing drapery and serene facial modelling associated with the transition from the Late Gothic to the Early Renaissance. The restrained treatment of the throne, together with the increasingly naturalistic proportions of the figures, suggests a date around 1500 and points towards a Northern French or Franco-Flemish workshop.
Surviving examples of this scale and quality are increasingly scarce. This sculpture possesses the quiet dignity and devotional warmth that distinguish the finest northern European Marian carvings of the period.
