Description
A highly impressive pair of tall Italian baroque pricket candlesticks, cast in brass, each with castellated drip pans above boldly knopped and hexagonal stems, supported on massive triform bases with scrolling volute feet. Retaining excellent original patination and presence.
These imposing candlesticks, standing at 37 inches, were made for ecclesiastical use, most likely to flank an altar in a church or monastery. Their dramatic scale and architectural design reflect the visual language of the Counter-Reformation, when church furnishings were intended to inspire awe and devotion through grandeur and ornament.
