Description

A striking pair of mid-17th century Italian brass pricket candlesticks of impressive scale, each with a castellated drip pan and tall pricket above a boldly knopped hexagonal stem. The architectural triform bases are powerfully modelled with deep scrolled feet, giving the candlesticks a strong sculptural presence.

Originally made for ecclesiastical use, such candlesticks would have stood upon an altar or in a chapel, their scale and design intended to convey both grandeur and permanence. The survival of a true pair of this quality is rare, and they represent an excellent example of Italian liturgical metalwork in the High Baroque period.
