Description
Finely carved oak panel depicting a merman grasping a writhing serpent, his scaled fishtail coiling into scrolling foliage. To the left, a cluster of grapes emerges amidst bold acanthus leaves. The composition combines classical and maritime motifs with Bacchic symbolism: the grapes evoking abundance and the pleasures of wine, while the serpent and merman reflect the dangers and mysteries of the sea.
Panels of this type were commonly produced in the Netherlands during the early 17th century, often for incorporation into larger decorative schemes such as furniture, wall panelling, or architectural surrounds. The quality of the carving, particularly the fine scale work and naturalistic foliage, is characteristic of the period’s Northern Renaissance manner.
