Description

A 17th-century oil on oak panel depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, with accompanying figures set against a cityscape. At the centre, Christ is shown on the Cross, above the skull and bones of Golgotha, beneath the inscription INRI. To the right stand the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist, their gestures expressing grief and devotion. To the left appears a bishop-saint, richly vested and holding a crozier, most likely St Nicholas or St Servatius, linking the work to a specific confraternity or ecclesiastical dedication.
The inclusion of a bishop alongside the central Passion narrative is typical of Netherlandish Catholic tradition, where universal biblical themes were adapted to local devotional needs. The background shows an urban skyline with towers and spires, situating the sacred drama within a recognisable Northern European context and enhancing its immediacy for contemporary viewers.
Painted on a two-plank oak panel, the work combines precise linear drawing with restrained but luminous colour, particularly in the bishop’s vestments and the Virgin’s blue mantle. It would likely have been commissioned for private devotion or for display in a chapel dedicated to the represented saint, serving as a focus for meditation on Christ’s sacrifice and intercessory prayer through the saint.
Condition: Panel stable with visible join; surface wear and minor retouching consistent with age. Retains strong colour and devotional clarity.

The presence of a bishop saint alongside the Virgin and St John suggests a local devotional commission, most likely for a confraternity or chapel under that saint’s patronage, situating the universal theme of the Crucifixion within a specific regional context.
