Description
A diminutive domestic Holy Family group comprising the Virgin (female figure, hands joined in prayer) and Saint Joseph (right, hand to breast) flanking a small standing Virgin and Child on an associated plinth. All three are carved in the round with tightly pleated, descending drapery and gentle head inclinations typical of Low Countries workshops in the first half of the seventeenth century. The simplified anatomy, parallel fold-systems and quiet piety reflect the late-Mannerist idiom current in Amsterdam/Antwerp circles after Hendrick de Keyser and Artus Quellinus the Elder, made for private devotion in household chapels (schuilkerken) following the Reformation.
Condition: Lovely dry patina; minor shrinkage fissures and edge wear; central plinth later; scale and surface consistent with domestic devotional use.
