Description

A pair of late medieval English architectural corbels, carved in oak, each representing a standing winged angel holding a shield carved in relief with a stylised rose.

The angels are boldly carved in the Gothic manner, with large heads, strongly defined features and abundant curled hair. Their wings descend around the bodies and are articulated with overlapping feather-like forms, now softened through age and wear. Each figure holds a substantial shield charged with a conventionalised rose, a motif widely employed in the heraldic and decorative vocabulary of fifteenth-century England.

The truncated backs and bases indicate an architectural function, probably as beam-end corbels or related timber enrichments within an ecclesiastical or high-status secular interior.

The oak has a dry and extensively worn surface, with old losses, cracks and minor historic insect activity. Traces of an old red surface survive in protected areas and recesses of the carving, suggesting an earlier decorative treatment

Angels were a familiar presence within the timber architecture of late medieval England, particularly in churches, where carved figures occupied roof structures, beam ends, corbels and other elevated positions. Their placement above the congregation was both decorative and symbolic, evoking the celestial realm and the protective presence of the heavenly host within the building.
