Not just another carved chair, but a great chair at that! The client who commissioned this piece did not want what every other had, this had to be a little more special, carved with a very fine back panel, depicting Adam and Eve holding the forbidden fruit, with a serpent wrapping around the tree looking on. Dated 1634 and initialed W C ,flanking a very finely carved winged angel. The lower rail below the panel carved with heavy vine and leaf. A feature that you rarely see on chairs are all four of the legs up to the seat rail are turned, with cup and cover type balusters united by a carved seat rail with typical West country style lunettes. The heavy deep arms another feature you seldom come across in 17th century chairs. Old repairs to the back and all lower stretcher and block feet replaced.
