Description

A West Country joined oak armchair of robust proportions, attributed to a Somerset workshop, circa 1630. The back panel is finely carved with a single arcade enclosing botanical imagery symbolising the tree of life, framed by guilloche ornament. The cresting rail is enriched with lunettes and scrolled motifs, while the unusual turned forelegs are joined by plain stretchers, typical of regional craftsmanship of this date. The deep channel-moulded seat rails and restrained decorative programme mark this as a product of Somerset joinery, combining durability with emblematic carving designed to convey fertility, growth, and divine order.

The tree-of-life motif carved within the arcade evokes renewal, fertility, and divine protection, while the surrounding guilloche signifies continuity and eternity, reflecting the chair’s role as both a functional seat and a symbolic object of authority.
