Description
An exceptional oak boarded box, richly carved to the front with interlacing strapwork scrolls, volutes, and stylised foliage, the design crisply executed and retaining traces of its original red polychromy within the recesses. The sides plain, the lid with original iron lockplate.
The bold strapwork carving belongs to the decorative language of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, echoing contemporary architectural ornament and the pattern books of Hans Vredeman de Vries and John Shute. Such ornament was associated with status, refinement, and the Renaissance ideal of order imposed on nature.
Boxes of this type were used both as secure storage and as domestic display pieces, with their strapwork fronts designed to be visible within a hall or chamber. The survival of original polychromy makes this example particularly important, offering rare insight into the vibrancy of Tudor–Stuart domestic interiors.
