Description

A fine West Country boarded oak box, the front carved with two large lunettes filled with radiating foliate motifs, a hallmark of Somerset craftsmanship in the mid-17th century. The carving, deeply cut with rhythmic precision, evokes both fertility and protection, symbolic qualities commonly associated with domestic storage pieces of this type. Retaining its original lock plate and rich, aged surface, the box exemplifies the robust yet decorative vernacular tradition of post-Restoration England.

The radiating lunettes carved on Somerset boxes of this period are thought to symbolise fertility, growth, and divine protection over the household. In a rural county still heavily tied to agriculture, these motifs drew on both Christian imagery (the Tree of Life, paradise) and older folk traditions of warding against misfortune, making them especially popular in mid-17th-century West Country furniture.
