Description

An oak boarded document or valuables box, the front carved with a continuous frieze of paired S-scrolls within linear borders, the surfaces enriched with extensive punch-decoration. The sides echo the same design, suggesting a workshop tradition firmly rooted in the West Country, and in particular Devon, where such lively scrollwork remained a favoured motif through the Restoration period. Retains its original iron lockplate.

The S-scroll, a Renaissance import into English decorative vocabulary, here arranged in rhythmic counter-curves, symbolises order, continuity, and the balance of opposing forces—a particularly apt motif in the turbulent years following the Interregnum. Boxes of this type were often made for prosperous households, serving to store deeds, accounts, and other important papers, and are rarely encountered in such complete and original condition
