Description
A small boarded oak spice cupboard, the front door boldly framed with applied mouldings forming a geometric panel centred on an octagon, flanked by turned half-baluster decoration. The door opens to reveal an interior fitted with an arrangement of drawers of various sizes, each retaining original iron pulls.
Spice cupboards were prized household furnishings in the later 17th century, used to store not only costly spices but also small valuables, documents, or apothecary items. Their secure lock and compact scale made them symbols of both wealth and domestic refinement. The architectural design of this example, with its bold moulded geometry and applied balusters, reflects the Restoration taste for order, symmetry, and classical detail.
