Description
A fine and rare boarded oak box from the celebrated East Devon workshops, the façade deeply carved with two large lunette motifs flanking a smaller lunette beneath the original lockplate. The lid with a single rear moulding, punch-decorated throughout.
The lunette design — a distinctive semi-circular motif with radiating petals — is closely associated with Devon and West Country joiners of the mid to late 17th century. It symbolised renewal and continuity, echoing both the natural world (the rising sun, seeds, and shells) and Christian resurrection imagery, making these boxes not merely functional but emblematic of household piety and prosperity.
