Description
A very rare survival in entirely untouched condition, this joined oak stool retains its deep, unpolished surface and structural integrity, qualities seldom encountered in 17th-century vernacular furniture. The stool is constructed with well-turned baluster legs, joined by turned stretchers, and plain moulded friezes. Its restrained design reflects the transitional style of the Restoration period, combining robust joinery with elegant turning.
What makes this example exceptional is its state of preservation: it has never been stripped, or refinished, and even retains a fragment of early paper still adhered to the seat. Such untouched pieces allow a direct glimpse into the workshop practices and domestic use of the late 17th century, unmediated by later restorations.
