Description
A rare mid-17th-century boarded oak document box of rectangular form, finely carved to the front with panels of scrolling leafy volutes set against a hatched ground, the central lockplate flanked by repeated foliate motifs. The lower section incorporates a fitted drawer, unusually enriched with applied leafy corbels carved in relief at the corners. The sides plain, the whole retaining a rich, dark surface of age.
The survival of the lower drawer places this example among the more sophisticated forms of document storage in provincial England, intended for the safekeeping of valuable papers, accounts, or ecclesiastical records. The carving style, with its bold scrolling foliate forms, is typical of West Country work, particularly from Somerset and Devon, where similar patterns appear in church woodwork and regional furniture of the mid-17th century.
