Description
An exceptionally rare survival of a 17th-century painted oak boarded box, the front and sides retaining traces of their original stencilled decoration in dark pigments, composed of rhythmic double S-scrolls and interlaced motifs. Such stencilling was a distinctive West Country decorative practice in the mid-17th century, most closely associated with Exeter and surrounding areas, where craftsmen used soot-based paints applied through hand-cut stencils to ornament otherwise plain boarded forms.
Painted furniture from this period very seldom survives, as surfaces were vulnerable to wear, over-painting, or stripping in later centuries. The survival of the stencilled design here is therefore of great rarity and importance, offering insight into the lively decorative traditions of the period.
The form of the box is typical of the period, with a hinged plank lid, applied iron lockplate, and robust boarded construction. Such boxes were versatile storage pieces, often used for household valuables, documents, or personal effects. The painted ornament, however, elevates this example into a category of vernacular luxury, where modest forms were enlivened with bold surface design.
