Description
An exceptionally rare Charles II boarded oak triangular hat box, of distinctive wedge-shaped form, the front and sides decorated with applied moulded panels enclosing raised bosses, centred by a large iron keyhole escutcheon.
Boxes of this design were specifically made to house the fashionable broad-brimmed beaver hats of the Restoration court, their unusual triangular profile conforming to the folded storage of such headwear. Surviving examples are extremely scarce, reflecting both their specialised purpose and the fragile nature of their use. The applied geometric mouldings to the front and sides lend the box a bold architectural character, in keeping with the taste for strong linear ornament during the Restoration period.
The present example is notable for its excellent colour and patina, the oak boards richly oxidised and surface retaining the marks of long use. Such objects, once practical containers, are now valued as rare survivals that speak directly to the material culture of fashion, status, and domestic life in 17th-century England.
