Description

A finely painted Delftware blue and white charger, decorated in the Chinoiserie style with a central scene of figures in a garden landscape. The composition features richly foliated trees, pavilions, and stylised rocks, echoing imported Chinese porcelain of the Wanli and Transitional periods, which were highly prized in Europe during the 17th century.
This example demonstrates the Dutch potters’ adaptation of Asian motifs for a European market hungry for exotic luxury goods. The figures are depicted in narrative poses within an idyllic garden setting, framed by ornamental flora in the foreground and architectural details to the rear. The broad border, characteristically left open, enhances the prominence of the painted interior.

Chargers of this scale were costly prestige items, often displayed in merchant homes and wealthy interiors as decorative showpieces. The present example, at over 13 inches in diameter, exemplifies the technical and artistic achievement of Delft workshops at their height, combining fine tin-glazed earthenware with striking cobalt decoration.
