Description
A large blue and white Delftware charger, finely decorated in cobalt blue with a central lozenge-shaped panel enclosing a Chinese figure within a stylised landscape of rocks, foliage, and pavilions. The reserve is framed by a wide border of scrolling foliage and fruiting motifs, interspersed with roundels and stylised panels.
This composition reflects the influence of Chinese Kangxi porcelain (1662–1722), widely imported into the Netherlands during the late 17th century and avidly copied by Delft potters when maritime disruptions curtailed porcelain supply. The combination of a central narrative scene framed within a diamond reserve, set against a bold ornamental border, is typical of Delft’s mature Chinoiserie style.
