Description

A Dutch Delftware jug of baluster form with a tall cylindrical neck, strap handle, and spreading footrim. The body is painted in vibrant polychrome enamels with a large stylised sunflower flanked by buds and foliage in yellow, orange, green, and blue, the handle similarly decorated with scattered floral sprigs. Typical tin-glazed earthenware of the mid–17th century, showing the bold and lively decoration associated with early Dutch Delft polychrome wares

This Delftware jug would have been used for serving drinks such as ale, beer, or wine at the table. Polychrome decorated Delftware of this type was fashionable in the mid-17th century and would have been owned by the prosperous middle and merchant classes, as well as the gentry, reflecting both practical use and a desire to display taste and status within the household.
