Description

A beautifully potted and finely painted Dutch Delft blue and white jug, of baluster form with a loop handle decorated with cobalt blue dotted detail, the body painted in a bright cobalt palette with dense floral ornament of tulips, carnations, and trefoils amidst scattered star motifs. A band of linked roundels encircles the rim, typical of Delftware of the last quarter of the seventeenth century.

The body form and fluent painted decoration reflect the mature style of Delft potteries around 1680–1700, when the industry achieved exceptional refinement under the influence of imported Kraak and Transitional Chinese porcelain. The potting is elegant and light, the glaze clear and lustrous, and the brushwork confident and rhythmic — hallmarks of production from workshops such as De Paauw (The Peacock) or De Drie Posteleyne Astonne (The Three Porcelain Ash-Barrels).
