Description
Early Elizabeth I oak joined cupboard of rare form and simply decorated with applied mouldings around the doors and drawers, with applied turned buttresses and supporting columns. The upper side panels with a late form of open tracery for ventilation.
The front frieze rail inscribed with VB/ SINE/ FIDE/ IMPOSSIBLE/ EST/ PLACERE/ DEO/ RB. This translates into (without faith it is impossible to please God)
The ornament and design of the cupboard is closely matched with the Castle Dairy bed and cupboard in Kendal, Cumbria, which both date to 1562, the third year of Queen Elizabeth 1st. Both the turned columns of the bed and cupboard match as do the heavy moulded panels.
Images two and three are from Castle Dairy.
