Description
An Elizabeth I enclosed oak armchair of strong architectural form. The back rest with plain central panel framed by a carved frieze of gadrooning beneath a boldly scrolled cresting rail. The shaped armrests of unusual form are tenoned directly into the front uprights, enclosing the seat with solid side and front panels designed to shield the sitter from draughts — a distinctive feature of late Tudor enclosed chairs.
Raised on turned baluster forelegs joined by plain stretchers, the whole constructed in pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, retaining a rich patina of age.
