Description
A richly carved Elizabethan joined oak chest, the front with four applied arcaded panels decorated with null-carved columns and leafy arches, each panel centred by a cartouche with a stylised fan crest above. The stiles carved with tulip-and-bud motifs typical of late Elizabethan ornament, and the frieze rail and sides enriched with serpent–dolphin scrolled foliage, a distinctive feature of West Country joinery of this period. Retaining its original iron lockplate and hasp.
The chest belongs to the expressive school of carving centred on the Severn Valley and Gloucestershire workshops, where Renaissance ornament was translated into bold architectural designs for domestic furniture. Its combination of arcading, tulip motifs, and serpent-scroll ornament demonstrates both the confidence of regional craftsmen and the aspirations of their patrons in the closing decades of Elizabeth’s reign.
