Description

A finely carved oak figure of an Atlante, the male form shown with arms crossed upon the chest beneath a shell-like headpiece, standing above a bold foliate mask with scrolling ornament. Such figures derive from the classical tradition of architectural supports, revived in Renaissance ornament and widely adopted in Elizabethan design. They embodied ideals of fortitude, endurance, and order, while their integration with foliate masks drew on themes of fertility and natural abundance.

Figures of this type adorned high-status furnishings and architectural schemes in late Tudor England, from tester beds to great cupboards and chimneypieces, where their moral and decorative functions were intertwined. The present example, with its strong modelling, ornamental base, and rich aged surface, is a rare survival from this important moment in English Renaissance design.
