Description
A small Elizabethan carved oak desk box of boarded construction, the front and sides decorated with a continuous nulled frieze, the thick oak boards forming a robust body with a sharply sloping hinged lid. The front fitted with its original iron lockplate.
Desk boxes of this form were used to store writing materials, accounts, and personal papers at a time when literacy was becoming increasingly valued among the gentry and merchant classes. Their compact size made them practical for both household and personal use, often kept on a table or great cupboard.
The nulled decoration, with its rhythmic crescent carving, is a hallmark of Elizabethan ornament, appearing widely on furniture of the period but particularly effective here in framing the compact architectural proportions of the box. The survival of such a piece in fine condition, with rich colour and surface, is testament to its careful use over four centuries
