Description

Elizabeth I joined oak Great chair, of large proportions. Exeter. Applied carved arcaded back panel with interlaced inlaid motif of holly and bog oak. The frieze rail with typical Exeter strap work and renaissance ornamentation with a cresting rail to complement.

The seat rails carved with block and chain motifs again an Exeter design, the two front turned columns of massive proportions and in the round from the top to the floor, this is a rare feature not seen on chairs of this type and normally only found on turners chairs.

Old repairs to the rear side of the back and seat replaced, rear feet tipped.

A chair from the same workshop is pictured in M.Jourdain’s, English decoration and Furniture of the early renaissance 1500 – 1650. fig 348, page 252. this example too with massive qualities.
