Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, the lobed rim painted in a cheerful palette of blue, orange, manganese and yellow with four large tulips alternating with small peony and carnation blooms, the cavetto centred by a matching spray. The tin glaze of warm bluish-white tone with slight pooling in the well, and the back fully glazed.

This lively plate represents the late Stuart period taste for bright, polychrome floral designs inspired by Dutch faience of the same era. The stylised tulip motifs echo the enduring fascination with the flower in both the Netherlands and England, while the simple rhythmic brushwork identifies the piece as English rather than continental. The fluted or “lobed” rim form was popular in both Bristol and London workshops from the 1670s onwards, probably used for dessert or display.
