Description
Exeter carved boarded oak box, carved with the classic Exeter strapwork pattern, is very closely related to the Thomas Dennis family Deed box (Bowdoin College, Museum of Art) The deep red / purple oak, typical of Exeter is riven. The Furniture History Society 1981, study closely the same carving.
Ancient lid repair possibly done in the early 18th century, and Georgian handles added in 18th century. Superb red surface.
