Description
A regional joined oak armchair, the tall rectangular backrest deeply carved with interlaced S-scrolls, heart motifs, and a central rosette enclosed within a panel framed by applied mouldings. Above, the cresting rail is boldly carved with entwined scrolls and foliage, flanked by raised roundel finials. The uprights form integral supports for shaped armrests on baluster-turned columnar front legs, joined by moulded seat rails and plain lower stretchers.
Chairs of this form are strongly associated with Exeter workshops, noted for their distinctive vocabulary of scrolling foliage and heart-shaped ornament. Surviving Exeter inventories (e.g. Henry James, 1620s: “In the Parlor, item a ioyned cheare”) specifically reference such high-status seating, reserved for the heads of household or honoured guests.
