Description
A fine late Gothic brass candlestick of typical Nuremberg form, with tall socket pierced by lateral apertures, raised on a baluster stem with multiple knops above a broad drip pan, all supported on a stepped circular base. The construction, with its bold proportions and simple, architectural profile, is characteristic of South German metalwork at the turn of the 16th century.
Candlesticks of this type were cast in sections and assembled by specialist founders in Nuremberg, a major centre of brass production in the late medieval and early Renaissance period. The wide drip pan served both a practical and symbolic function: catching wax in ecclesiastical settings and reflecting the Gothic emphasis on light as a metaphor of the divine.
This example retains a fine patina and exemplifies the restrained elegance of German Gothic brassware before the emergence of more elaborate Renaissance forms.
