Description
A late Gothic oak chest front, deeply carved with twin arched parchemin panels flanking a central field of elaborate blind tracery, surmounted by its original wrought iron lock plate. The tracery, with its cusped arches and pointed gables, draws directly on the architectural vocabulary of French Flamboyant Gothic, echoing the stone carving of contemporary cathedrals.
Chests of this type were prestigious household furnishings, serving both as secure storage and as statements of wealth and piety. The careful execution of the tracery, mimicking church architecture, reflects the medieval belief in the protective and symbolic power of sacred forms brought into the domestic sphere.
