Description
A finely carved Gothic oak panel depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, one of the most important devotional subjects of the late Middle Ages. The Virgin is shown seated at the centre, hands joined in prayer, while she is crowned by Christ and God the Father, the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove above — the full Trinity present in the act of crowning the Queen of Heaven. Christ holds the orb of dominion, underscoring the cosmic significance of the scene.
The upper section retains an elaborate openwork Gothic tracery frieze, adding both architectural depth and symbolic resonance. Panels such as this would have been set into the front of a high-status chest or reliquary, directly beneath the lockplate, so that the act of opening and closing the chest was framed by sacred imagery. Such decoration not only proclaimed the piety of the owner but also served as a protective invocation.
