Description
A late Gothic oak sculpture of the Pietà, showing the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ after the Crucifixion. Mary is depicted seated, her mantle painted in gilded tones with green and red highlights, while the emaciated body of Christ rests heavily across her lap, marked with the wounds of the Passion.
The Pietà was among the most affecting devotional subjects of the late Middle Ages, encouraging meditation on both Mary’s compassion and Christ’s suffering. This intimate example, carved in oak and retaining much of its polychrome surface, was likely intended for private devotion.
Areas of the Virgin’s face, particularly the eyebrows, have been retouched in a later period, a common historic practice, but the work remains an eloquent expression of late Gothic piety and retains strong presence.
