Description
A substantial early Tudor oak boarded chest, the front deeply carved with a series of large lunettes containing blind Gothic arcading with floral bosses, set around a central roundel. The design bridges the late medieval taste for architectural tracery with the emerging decorative vocabulary of the Tudor period.
The chest retains its original boarded construction, with evidence of long use and historic maintenance: the wrought-iron lock plate, though old, is a period replacement, and the lower right-hand spandrel shows an early repair. These features are entirely consistent with sixteenth-century furniture that remained in use for generations, and they highlight the value placed on such robust storage forms.
Boarded chests of this scale and with such elaborate tracery are scarce survivals. They were intended not only as strong storage for textiles, plate, or documents, but also as important statements of household wealth, often positioned prominently within the hall or chamber. The deep-cut carving, bold proportions, and untouched surface combine to make this a particularly impressive example in the flesh, its presence far exceeding photographs.
