Description
An exceptional boarded oak desk box of compact form, the front and sides finely carved with a series of blind arcaded panels, each deeply recessed and rhythmically repeated to create a strong architectural presence. The arcaded design is reminiscent of contemporary Renaissance ornament found on domestic furniture, choir stalls, and panelling of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, often intended to evoke stability, order, and classical learning.
The sloping lid opens to reveal its original compartmentalised interior with fitted divisions and an integral side compartment, intended for writing implements, papers, and valuables. Remarkably, the underside of the lid retains its early painted blue-green wash – a rare survival of original decorative surface treatment, which adds significant historical value.
