Description
An exceptional and rare pair of carved walnut architectural supports, depicting a male Atlante and a female Caryatid, each shown full-bodied, standing upright with crossed arms and modestly draped loins. Both figures wear stylised shell-like headpieces beneath Ionic volutes, combining classical motifs with the ornamental vocabulary of early 17th-century English Mannerism.
Such figures derive from the antique tradition of structural “bearers,” symbolic of strength, virtue, and order, and were incorporated into elite furnishings and interiors in Jacobean England — from tester beds and great cabinets to fireplace surrounds. The use of walnut rather than oak denotes high-status commission and continental influence, while the rarity of full-bodied forms, rather than the more common term or half-figures, marks these as highly important survivals.
