Description
Late 15th century English ironbound and leather standard. The leather covering of the chest is securely held by widely spaced flat iron straps running vertically and horizontally, interwoven around the chest. The front with its original three hasp and lock plates and central carrying handle. The back with interwoven straps also incorporating seven hinges and a central carrying handle. each side with carrying handles.
The chest is made from Poplar wood, these chests would have been carried on wagons, so lightweight and strong materials were a must. A near identical chest is associated with Lady Margaret Beaufort and is in Westminster Abbey library.
