Description

Late 17th century Lantern clock, signed Nicholas Fry of Godstone, the clock is original and unaltered anchor escapement with long pendulum, fitted with count wheel strike.

Nicholas Fry is a little known maker, Brian Loomes records clocks by him. He was certainly working in Godstone by 1690 from when a couple of other lantern clocks are known. He bought a lease on a farm five miles north of Godstone in 1712 to 1732 at Filsham farm, St Leonards, and died in November 1739 and is buried in St Nicholas parish church, Godstone.
