Description

A pair of late Gothic / early Renaissance bronze pricket candlesticks, each with wide drip pan above a turned and ringed shaft rising from a boldly moulded circular base. The shafts are articulated with multiple knops, giving a strongly architectural profile characteristic of early 16th-century Nuremberg work. The drip pans with central prickets retain evidence of liturgical use; small chips around the rims are consistent with age and devotional handling.
This robust yet refined form sits at the transition between the Gothic and Renaissance aesthetic, retaining medieval solidity while introducing the measured symmetry of the early Renaissance.
Comparable examples are held in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, and in several major European ecclesiastical collections. Pairs of this size and date are particularly scarce survivors, having once served in churches or chapels where few have remained together.

These candlesticks exemplify the high-quality bronze casting of Nuremberg workshops around 1500, a city then renowned for its metalwork alongside Augsburg.
