More information

Late Gothic/early Renaissance Flemish carved oak linenfold armoire, circa 1510 - 1520. The front with a pair of divided hinged cupboard doors with twelve fine linenfold panels, with the original hinges, enclosing two later shelves one with drawers. The sides each with six long linenfold panels, the cornice a later replacement. This armoire is rare in that it has the early 16th century innovation of two double doors which are made up of four hinged panels, which fold as they are opened thus taking up less space than if opened outwards. The medieval structure has a typical construction indicating Flanders. A similar type of armoire sold in Sotheby's 2002 (The Art of Flanders) lot 18, for £204,650 although a much better example with portrait panels and finer ironwork. Normal repairs as expected with age, patches here and there.
