Description
A substantial and exceptionally well-preserved Gothic oak cupboard of imposing scale, the front with two large doors each set with four deeply carved linenfold panels, the sides with a further eight panels arranged in pairs. The panels are framed within moulded stiles, with sharply cut corner buttresses terminating in stylised Gothic points. The doors retain their original heavy wrought iron strap hinges and brackets, displaying fine blacksmith’s work of the period.
The linenfold carving, crisply modelled and with a distinctive vertical emphasis, represents the mature late Gothic style of the Southern Netherlands. Its deep concavity and ridged folds capture the illusion of rolled parchment — a motif symbolic of learning and ecclesiastical tradition. Such cupboards were typically used in monastic or patrician settings for the storage of vestments, linen, and important household textiles.
Although the top has been replaced in keeping with the original period design, the carcass survives in a rare state of authenticity. The construction is of thick quarter-sawn oak, jointed with pegged mortise-and-tenon, displaying the robustness associated with Bruges craftsmanship at the turn of the 16th century.
