Description

A rare matched pair of late Gothic pricket candlesticks of unusually small proportions, finely cast in copper alloy. Each with a sharp central pricket above a shallow drip pan, raised on a turned conical and baluster stem, and resting on a moulded circular base.
While larger Gothic prickets are more frequently encountered in church and domestic contexts, examples of this diminutive scale are exceptionally rare and were likely intended for private devotional use within the home, or for a small domestic altar. Their form retains the late medieval vocabulary of design—conical turning, crisp drip pans, and upright prickets—while anticipating the baluster traditions of the Northern Renaissance.

Candlesticks of this scale—just over 5 inches tall—would not have been intended for a church choir stall, chapel altar, or large domestic hall, where taller prickets (often 12–24 inches high) were required for visibility and light. Instead, their intimate proportions strongly suggest private devotional use. They may have been placed on a small table altar, a prie-dieu (prayer desk), or even a domestic shrine niche, illuminating a crucifix, reliquary, or devotional image.
In late medieval and early Renaissance Europe, particularly in the Low Countries, the culture of private piety was very strong. Wealthier households often maintained personal spaces for prayer, and objects like these prickets provided the necessary light for reading prayer books or meditating before an image. Their modest scale also made them portable—easy to move between rooms, or even to travel with.
