Description
Carved in limewood and retaining its original polychromy, this intimate sculpture shows the crowned Virgin standing serenely, presenting the Christ Child to the viewer. The crisp drapery folds retain the vertical rhythm of Gothic tradition, while the tender, more naturalistic modelling of the Child reflects the transition towards the Renaissance. At just 20 inches high, it was most likely intended for private devotion in a domestic setting or as part of a small chapel ensemble. Such works were widely produced in Swabia and Franconia during the early 16th century, reflecting the enduring Marian piety of the region.
