Description
A rare medieval English roof boss, deeply carved in oak with swirling foliate forms, the surface retaining traces of its original medieval blue painted ground. The lobed, organic carving spirals outward from the centre, giving the boss both architectural strength and symbolic resonance.
Roof bosses were carved keystones placed at the intersections of ribs in vaulted or timbered church ceilings. They not only served a structural function but were also highly symbolic, acting as visual focal points within sacred spaces. The survival of medieval paint here is particularly important: blue, derived from costly azurite or indigo pigments, was strongly associated with the Virgin Mary, heaven, and divine truth.
The leafy design reflects the enduring medieval tradition of the Green Man and foliate ornament, symbolising rebirth, resurrection, and the eternal cycle of nature, appropriate for church settings where architectural sculpture carried layered meaning.
