Description
This finely carved medieval figure represents St John the Evangelist, recognisable by the youthful features and the book of the Gospel held in his left hand. Executed in limewood, the sculpture retains important remnants of its original polychromy, including traces of red, gilding, and surface decoration that would once have enlivened the drapery folds. The small red volume, enriched with a cross, underscores his identity as the author of one of the four Gospels.
The figure’s frontal, upright stance, with feet placed together and a gently idealised face, reflects the Gothic idiom of the late 14th to early 15th century, when devotional imagery sought to convey both serenity and divine presence. The relatively flat-backed form suggests that this sculpture was created to occupy a niche or architectural setting, likely as part of a larger altarpiece ensemble.
