Description
A finely carved Renaissance oak panel depicting the Nativity. At the centre, the Virgin Mary is shown kneeling in adoration beside the Christ Child, accompanied by Joseph, with the ox and ass in the background. Above shines the Star of Bethlehem, guiding the shepherds who gather in witness. The scene is framed by bold Renaissance scrollwork enriched with foliate ornament, lending a sense of architectural grandeur to this intimate devotional subject.
Panels of this type were produced in the Netherlands and Northern Germany during the late 16th century for private devotion, often forming part of domestic altarpieces or triptychs. The present example retains a remarkable level of detail and iconographic clarity, reflecting the enduring popularity of the Nativity as a focus of Christian meditation and worship.
