Description
A large and impressive pair of late Renaissance bronze pricket candlesticks, each finely cast with tall baluster stems above a square sectioned base with moulded socle, supported on tripod feet with paw-like terminals. The broad drip pans and sharply tapering prickets retain their strong architectural profile, reflecting the sculptural boldness of Italian foundry work in the second half of the sixteenth century.
Such candlesticks were designed for ecclesiastical settings, where their considerable height and weight made them suitable for display on high altars or in side chapels, providing both illumination and visual emphasis to the liturgy. The form is rooted in the long Italian bronze-casting tradition, closely allied with the workshops responsible for bells and cannon, and demonstrates the Renaissance concern with both utility and monumentality.
